  • Summary: The Oakeshott papers document much of his work as a scholar of Medieval art history and Elizabethan England and also reflect his lifelong passion for studying and collecting early books and maps. His investigations in the Winchester College and Cathedral libraries and his own collection led to several bibliographic discoveries and identifications from which developed many publications and lectures of both a scholarly and popular nature. The archive primarily consists of drafts for books, articles and lectures, along with numerous photographs used for research and the illustration of these publications. Also included are proofs and reprints of many Oakeshott articles, as well as offprints of writings by other scholars. Also, several folders of correspondence of a professional and personal nature: sermons and addresses, eulogies and obituaries written and delivered by Oakeshott largely during his time as Headmaster at Winchester College, Rector of Lincoln College, and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University.
Series I, Personal and professional papers (.75 lin. ft.): Includes correspondence, with many copies of Oakeshott's replies, arranged chronologically (1949-1986). Letters from the early years (1949-1954) date from Oakeshott's Headmastership at Winchester College and mostly concern his research and publication projects. Correspondence from 1954-72 dates from his time at Lincoln College and Oxford and includes both professional and personal topics. The files also contain several notebooks, some filled with sermons and other writings in Oakeshott's hand, with many notes and clippings inserted; mss and typescripts of sermons, obituaries and eulogies; a speech he gave at his 80th birthday party; and several personal photographs.
Series II, Medieval art (2 lin. ft.): Ca. 150 photographs and postcards used for the research and illustration of Mosaics of Rome, 1967; material on the Winchester ms. of Malory's Morte d'Arthur, including Oakeshott's articles, press clippings regarding its sale, a catalog for a Winchester exhibition (1936) when it was first displayed after its identification by Oakeshott; drafts and illustrations for Two Winchester Bibles (1981); drafts for a catalog of initials (unpublished); mss. and typescripts for lectures on the Winchester Bible and artists; ca. 350 photographs of the Winchester Bible, Morgan Leaf and related material, many with Oakeshott's notes on the back; ms. and notes for the article The Abbott who thought he knew better, concerning two 12th-century Zacharias Chrysopolitanus mss.; ca. 50 photographs of wall paintings from Sigena; ca. 510 photographs of ancient, Early Christian and Medieval art; various offprints and a lecture on Romanesque art.
Series III, Renaissance and Elizabethan studies (.75 lin. ft.): Material from the publication Some woodcuts by Hans Burgkmair, printed for the Roxburghe Club (1960), including two metal plates replicating Burgkmair woodcuts; typescripts, with some proofs, offprints and photographs, for ca. 9 Oakeshott articles, and a lecture on Renaissance and Elizabethan topics. Also, English transcriptions of 5 letters from Philip II of Spain concerning the provisioning of Spanish ships (1585-86, 1588).
Series IV, Various studies (1 lin. ft.): 3 typescripts for articles on the history of Winchester College library, the Cathedral library and the restoration of the college chapel; notes and an article on the restoration of stone buildings at Oxford, especially the Sheldonian theatre, with related correspondence and ca. 100 photographs. Other typescripts cover topics such as terra-cotta statuettes, black-figure cups, the Borchardt Measure, Oakeshott's school days and teachers, ancient and Medieval trade routes, as well as 10 book reviews. 65 glass negatives show aerial views of English sites, views and architectural renderings of libraries, maps and medieval art.
Series V, Assorted printed material (.75 lin. ft.): Press clippings, 26 offprints of articles by various scholars, ca. 180 photographs and postcards of art objects from various periods, and a bound report, with photographs, compiled by Roger Powell and describing the rebinding and repair (1953-54) of the Book of Kells and the Book of Durrow.
