  • Title:
Preparatory drawings and proofs for La Galerie electorale de Dusseldorff, ca. 1768-1778.
  • Creation Date: ca. 1768-1778.
  • Physical Desc.: 4 boxes, including 3 volumes, and sheets of drawings, etchings, and texts..
  • Summary: The collection documents the production of one of the earliest illustrated published catalogs of a princely art collection: Nicolas de Pigage and Christian von Mechel's printed catalog La Galerie electorale de Dusseldorff (Basel, 1778). It comprises preparatory drawings, printer's proofs, manuscript inventory lists, and a copy of the publication itself.
The preparatory drawings for the printed catalog, including wall elevations of the Düsseldorf Gallery and drawings after paintings in the gallery, are signed by Joseph August Brulliot, Jean-Victor Frédou de la Bretonnière, Georg Metellus, Johann Gerhard Huck and Joseph Erb, who were professors at the recently established Düsseldorf Academy. The preparatory drawings after the paintings include loose pencil drawings, many of them squared, as well as an album of red chalk and watercolor drawings, whose 19th century-binding is ornamented with the coat of arms of the House of Palatinate-Neuburg. Proofs for the catalog include uncut sheets of text and etched plates in multiple states. The copy of the published catalog is of the 1778 original edition and has the text and plates bound in one volume.
  • Language: French
  • Notes: The printed catalog La Galerie electorale de Dusseldorff celebrates the collection of European paintings at the Düsseldorf gallery, which was constructed between 1709 and 1714 by Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm II von der Pfalz. It exemplifies the display of the paintings as Lambert Krahe, gallery director for Elector Palatine Carl Theodor, had hung them. The catalog was produced by Düsseldorf's court architect Nicolas de Pigage, the Swiss printmaker and publisher Christian von Mechel, and the French linguist Jean-Charles Laveaux.
