  • Biographical/Historical Note: In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections and renamed the Photo Study Collection.
  • Arrangement: Study photographs are filed by national school, alphabetically by artist, and by Bartsch number.

  • Summary: The photographs in this collection reproduce European prints originally cataloged by Adam von Bartsch in Le peintre graveur (21 volumes, 1803-1821). Images of prints from vols. 1-10 and 12-21 of the catalog were issued from prints in the British Museum under a subscription project sponsored by the Warburg Institute, University of London, with further prints produced by Arthur Douglas from 1978.
    This collection overlaps with the corresponding volumes of The illustrated Bartsch, but includes additional states of prints. Furthermore, Getty Research Institute staff study have subsequently added photographs of prints that are relevant to the artists and schools described by Bartsch, but were not actually cataloged by him.
