  • Summary: One of four sets of photographs made for scholar D. Stephen Pepper during a campaign carried out in Rome in 1966. The photographs are devoted to frescoes in Roman churches painted in the latter half of the 16th century, with particular attention to artists working under Pope Sixtus V. Artists involved include Andrea Lilio, Ferraù Fenzoni, Giovanni Baglione, and Orazio Gentileschi as well as numerous others. Complete coverage of the frescoes is available for churches such as S. Cesareo, S. Cecilia in Trastevere, and SS. Nereo e Achilleo which had decorative systems related to the revival of Early Christian decoration, a major influence in Roman art of the Counter-Reformation during the period 1580-1620.
