  • Summary: The photographs document houses and palaces in the historic center of Florence, primarily from the late medieval to Baroque period, with some buildings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of the images are of single buildings, though the sharp viewing angle necessitated by Florence's narrow streets results in many streetscapes. Annotations on the versos of the photographs provide street names and building numbers, together with the conventional building name (name of original owner) when relevant; names of architects are occasionally provided as well. There are also views of neighborhoods, details of architectural ornamentation, fresco decoration, bust portraits, insignia, and coats of arms attached to buildings. Some of the views are of medieval tower houses, photographed about 1950, after the removal of war damage but before the neighborhoods were rebuilt.
