  • Summary: This collection of approximately 7,400 photographic prints constitutes D.A. Amyx's personal photographic archive for his 1988 publication Corinthian vase-painting of the archaic period. The photos were acquired by Amyx from many sources; some he took himself. Maintained in binders following Amyx's arrangement, the majority of prints are mounted on sheets containing his notes, with additional sheets of notes occasionally interspersed. The collection is accompanied by a small group of offprints (many annotated) and other ephemera and a card file that records the contents of Amyx's personal library. (Books from Amyx's library that were acquired with this collection have been transferred to the Getty Research Institute's library.)
Because it is found at nearly all archaic sites and its stylistic evolution is well defined, Corinthian pottery is a cornerstone of 8th-6th century BC chronology throughout the Mediterranean area. While Amyx approached the material from the point of view of classification, the collection serves as a fundamental reference tool for field archaeologists and those studying archaic Greek art, trade, and the resulting impact of archaic Greek civilization on the surrounding Mediterranean territories.
The negatives that accompany this collection contain images of both Corinthian and non-Corinthian vases as well as some materials other than pottery, including the inventory of several private collections.
