  • Biographical/Historical Note: In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections and renamed the Photo Study Collection.
  • Arrangement: Arranged by school and within each school by printmaker. Photographs for artists represented by more than one box are further subdivided by subject depicted. An appended section of prints made to illustrate texts is arranged by title of the text.

  • Summary: A collection of photographs documenting prints created from the 14th-19th centuries through the work of approximately 2,584 artists (designers and printmakers) assembled by the Getty Research Institute. The collection contains photographs acquired from numerous sources, including the archives of scholars J. G. van Gelder, Erwin Panofsky, and Jaap Bolten. Photographs and auction clippings came from dealers' archives such as those of Douwes Fine Art Gallery and Duits. Copy prints were acquired from commercial sources such as Bulloz, Fabio Lensini/Foto Grassi, J.R. Freeman (works offered by Colnaghi), as well as auction houses like Christie's and Sotheby's.
