  • Summary: This optical theater or peep show was created as a souvenir of the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The cover of the peepshow depicts a panoramic view of the Exposition as seen from the Trocadero. The scene on the Champs de Mars is dominated by the large, circular Palais de l'Exposition which housed displays from every participating country. Surrounding the Palais are smaller pavilions including a mosque, a factory, a lighthouse and other buildings. In the foreground is the grand entrance to the Exposition and along the banks of the Seine one can see carriage traffic and pedestrians. Looking into the peepshow has the effect of entering the Palais and viewing exhibits of paintings, sculpture, machinery and weapons. The three-dimensional effect is created by the use of four illustrated sheets attached to the illustrated back panel accordion-style, allowing the sheets to fold out and the images to overlap. The three peepholes provide different vantage points for viewing the interior of the Palais.
