  • Summary: Collection consists of correspondence between Matisse and Courthion concerning the editing and publication of a series of interviews conducted by Courthion in 1941; a typescript of the nine interviews; and related notes and other materials.
    Series: I. Interview correspondence, 1940-1941. Thirty-one letters between Henri Matisse, Pierre Courthion and Lucien Chachaut concerning the transcription, editing and publication of the interview. One letter is illustrated.
    Series II. Interview, 1941. A 142 p. typescript of nine interviews with Matisse by Pierre Courthion. The interviews constitute an oral autobiography with information of Matisse's education, travels and major works, and with substantial discussion of Eugene Carriere, Paul Cezanne, Marcel Jambon, Albert Marquet, Gustave Moreau, Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, Georges Rouault and the Ballets russes. The final interview includes a lengthy conversation about Matisse's perception of the role of the artist as well as his theories of color and light. Index available. Photocopies available.
    Series III. Notes and papers. Pierre Courthion's papers concerning the Matisse interview, including a hand-edited copy of the text, Courthion's notes for the conversations, his contract with the publisher Skira and printed ephemera on Matisse. Also included are portions of the interview rejected for publication by Matisse which concern Matisse's relationships with Marcel Sembat and American collectors.
