  • Biographical/Historical Note: Since the 1960s, American artist Eleanor Antin (born February 27, 1935) has worked in film, video, photography, installation, writing and peformance.

  • Summary: One of Eleanor Antin's best-known conceptual artworks, 100 Boots is a serial work of mail art consisting of 51 postcards mailed by Antin between 1971 and 1973. Structured like a serial novel in which the boots are the protagonist, the visual narrative follows the boots as they travel from California to New York, culminating in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1973. One side of each postcard features a reproduction of a black-and-white photograph of the boots at a differnt location along the route, by photographer Philip Steinmetz. On the verso of each postcard is printed the title, location, date, return address, artist's name and photographer's name.
