  • Biographical/Historical Note: Successors to Janentzky & Weber, Manufacturers & Importers, F. Weber & Company, Inc. was established in 1853, incorporated in 1920. The company manufactured artists' supplies, including painting and drawing supplies, mathematical instruments, materials for gilders, sign and coach-painters, china decorators, engineers, lithographers, etchers and engravers, as well as materials for pyrography, or wood burning, and wax and paper flowers. Their main office was located at 1125 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia and branch houses existed at 709 Locust Street, St. Louis, and 5 North Charles Street, Baltimore. Frederick Weber (junior) was a chemist, author, lecturer and painter.

  • Summary: The archive of F. Weber & Company, Inc. contains printed catalogues, sample books and brochures, ledgers with financial and technical information, including paint formulas, a small amount of correspondence and other business papers, manuscripts of lectures given by F. Weber, and photographs from trade fairs.
    Series I. Trade catalogues and price lists, 1876-1962, n.d., (ca. 78 catalogues) comprises an incomplete collection of the issues produced by F. Weber & Company from the late 19th through the mid-20th century. Several brochures with paint chip samples attached are inserted in the catalogues. Organized chronologically.
    Series II. Paint formula books, ca. 1865-1967, n.d. (ca. 30 books) are handwritten ledgers, mostly covering the first six decades of the 20th century, documenting most aspects of F. Weber & Company's manufacture of paints and inks, including special orders and customers. Many of the ledgers include inserted paint samples. All of the ledgers cover a span of years, some as many as 20 years. All of the ledgers are fragile. Organized roughly in chronological order.
    Series III. Sample books, (ca. 30 items) 1925-1951, include 2 printed notebooks of canvas samples, a paint sample book, and sample brochures and cards for colored tissues, and binding papers, various paints and inks and colored pencils. They were used primarily as sales aids.
    Series IV. Business papers (2.5 linear ft.) 1870-1973, scattered years, include 4 small wage and expense account books from the 1870s; a ledger of Weber stock on hand for 1897; 3 stock certificate books, 1921-1963; blueprints, a drawing and specifications for a factory building, 1917; and by-laws and incorporation papers, 1920-21. The company's participation in trade fairs and expositions (1922-1941, scattered years) is documented with some correspondence, printed material and 15 photographs. There are also ca. 15 lectures and several announcements for lectures by Frederick Weber, ca. 1922-35, in manuscript and printed form, on the technical aspects of artists' materials, especially paints.
    Series V. Other companies' trade catalogues and price lists (ca. 40 items) were collected by the Weber Company in the course of doing business and date from 1870-1951. Arranged alphabetically by company name. Monographs from the archive were transferred to the general collection of the Getty's Research Library.
