  • Biographical/Historical Note: In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections and renamed the Photo Study Collection.
  • Arrangement: Arranged by country of origin, then type of object (candelabra, candlesticks, chandeliers, girandoles, lanterns, torchères, wall lights). Some object type categories further divided by style/period and type of decoration.

  • Summary: A collection of photographs offering comprehensive coverage of 18th and 19th century European lighting, of which two-thirds are French artifacts assembled by the Getty Research Institute. French candelabra are well represented (circa 1,000 photographs) and show a variety of figural and non-figural sculptural decoration, some of it signed by known artists. Other lighting types include bronze and carved/turned wood torchères (mostly Italian or English), chandeliers and girandoles with cut glass or crystal pendants, numerous candlesticks, and wrought iron lighting from various countries.
    Approximately 65% of the photographs come from auction houses and dealers, in particular the New York firm of French & Company. Other photos were acquired from European and American museums such as the Louvre, Versailles, and Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris; Victoria and Albert Museum and Wallace Collection in London; museums in Munich; the Hermitage and the Pavlovsk Palace Museum in Russia; Metropolitan Museum of Art; J. Paul Getty Museum; and the fine arts museums of San Francisco, Cleveland, and Toledo.
