  • Summary: This assembled collection of photographs illustrates 17th-19th century objects made for use by travellers: portable desks, tableware services, trunks, and transportation vehicles (sedan chairs and carriages). Three quarters of the objects depicted are French, with the remaining examples from other European countries, chiefly Italy, Great Britain, and Germany. Most of the photographs were acquired from auction houses and dealers; French and Company, New York, furnished approximately one third. Other sources include Alinari and a few European museums.
