  • Summary: This assembled collection of photographs illustrates decorative objects made of materials of organic origin: bone, coral, ivory, mother of pearl, shell, and tortoiseshell. The coral artifacts are Chinese; the ivory is Japanese, Anglo-Indian, Russian, and German; the tortoiseshell is mostly Italian work. Photographs in this collection are drawn either from auction house files (chiefly Parke-Bernet, New York) or from French & Company, New York. (Organic materials, especially pearls, are also found on some of the jewelry in photographs filed under Metals in the Photo Study Collection's decorative arts section.)
