  • Biographical/Historical Note: In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections and renamed the Photo Study Collection.

  • Summary: A collection of photographs illustrating numerous types of decorative box, in examples dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries assembled by the Getty Research Institute. Most are French or German, with limited coverage of boxes from Austria, Belgium, China, England, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The group best represented is snuff boxes, with many examples made of precious metals, painted enamel, and porcelain, mounted with jewels, pearls, and ivory. Other box types represented are caskets, carnets, and game boxes in carved wood, chiseled metals, marquetry, or covered in leather.
    Auction house files comprise the major sources for these photographs. Other sources include the New York dealer French & Company, together with a number of museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
