  • Summary: This assembled collection of photographs chiefly illustrates detached panels of European stained glass, most dating to the 15th to the 18th centuries, together with some examples from the 14th or 19th-20th centuries. The panels, from France, Flanders, Germany, and Switzerland, were sold by dealers and auction houses, generally on the American market. A small number of reproductions from the Alinari and Mario Salmi files show panels in situ in Italian buildings, particularly in Tuscany. The majority of the panels have religious subjects, though heraldic, commemorative, hunting, marriage, and other genre scenes are also represented.
Sixty percent of the collection is drawn from the picture archives of the New York dealer, French & Company. Other sources are the archives of scholars Mario Salmi and Frederick Hartt.
