  • Summary: These photographs collected by Mario Del Chiaro formed the core of his research photo archive. Del Chiaro acquired them from many sources; some he took himself. One of the most extensive documentary archives in the U.S. devoted to Etruscan potters and painters, it offers a visual record of Etruscan pottery production and Etruscan iconography during the Classical and early Hellenistic periods. The majority of the photographs are of Etruscan red-figured vases attributed to the three major groups of Etruscan vase-painters and workshops (Caeretan, Tarquinian, and Faliscan), as well as other minor workshops. Many of the vases are unpublished or infrequently illustrated examples from public and private collections and on the art market throughout Europe and North America.
Photographs have handwritten or typed annotations with information on location, attribution, and bibliography. There are also a small number of comparative photographs of bronze vessels, sarcophagi, and gems; a few drawings by Del Chiaro; and a small amount of printed ephemera filed throughout. One box in the collection contains offprints of journal articles by Mario Del Chiaro as well as copies of two of his books, The Etruscan Funnel group (1974), and Etruscan red-figured vase-painting at Caere (1974).
