  • Summary: Over 20,000 files, collected by the Provenance Index since 1983, provide information on fine art collectors of Western European and American art, and the history of collecting. The collection documents art collecting, especially the collecting of paintings, from ca. 1500 to the present day.
Files include dealers', institutional, and city records, scholars' and collectors' documents. The collection comprises inventories, publications including sales catalogues and articles, travel diaries, research notes from historians, genealogical data, and other information pertinent to the history of the formation of individual art collections. Most of the documentation consists of photocopies or microform copies of archival records and personal papers. The Provenance Index staff continues to add to the collection.
Notable resources in the Collectors' files include Frank Simpson's material on British collections (original and photocopied research materials), Ellis Waterhouse's notebooks that contain his comments on British and European collections from 1924-1985 (originals are in the Getty Research Library, Special Collections), the Courtauld Institute's photographic survey "Lists of works of art found in UK collections," and Italian records for the exportation of paintings in the 18th and 19th centuries.
