  • Summary: The major part (95%) of this assembled collection of photographs comprises images of inkstands that combine multiple media, such as wood, ceramics, stone, lacquer, and metals. (Images of inkstands made in a single medium are filed elsewhere, by medium.) The balance of the collection illustrates other writing accessories, such as desk sets, pen boxes, blotters, seals, and candleholders. Approximately 75% of the objects depicted are French, dating from the Baroque period to the early 20th century; the remainder are English or German, the latter often including some porcelain in their decoration.
    Approximately half the photographs were acquired from major French museums, the Wallace Collection, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, with the remainder coming from major auction houses and several dealers, including French & Company, New York.
