  • Summary: This assembled collection of modern photographs includes objects made of all kinds of stone, such as marble, alabaster, porphyry, jasper, lapis lazuli, and jade. Objects employing mosaic, pietre dure, and scagliola techniques are depicted as well. Most images are of vases of all shapes and sizes, while some show columns, pieces of furniture, and boxes. The pietre dure objects are mostly unmounted table tops and picture-like panels.
    Approximately 65% of the objects depicted are French, dating from the Baroque to the late 19th century (of the French objects, two thirds have mounts); the remainder are Italian, English, and Russian. About half of the objects are housed in major European museums, including the Louvre, Versailles, Musée Carnavalet, and Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and Wallace Collection in London. The other half of the photographs were acquired from major auction houses and dealers.
