  • Biographical/Historical Note: In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections.

  • Summary: This assembled collection of modern photographs offers comprehensive coverage of French decorative drawings of the 17th-19th centuries. Approximately 15% of the collection represents Italian and British drawings of the 16th-19th centuries. Most of the original drawings are by identified artists. The drawings reflect all areas of the decorative arts, from architectural elements, interiors, and floor plans to a variety of decorative objects, including furniture, lighting, vases, metal objects and mounts, jewelry, and clocks.
    These photographs were assembled from just a few sources: two-thirds from the Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris, and the rest from the Kunstbibliothek of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design in New York.
