  • Title:
    Hahn v. Duveen, 1929-1933
  • Creation Date: 1929-1933
  • Physical Desc.: 17 volumes ; 1 photograph
  • Summary: The Hahn v. Duveen lawsuit was brought against Duveen Brothers by Andrée Hahn of Kansas City. Hahn claimed to own Leonardo da Vinci's La belle ferronnière and hoped to sell the work as such, when Joseph Duveen declared the painting to be a feeble copy of Leonardo da Vinci's painting in the Louvre.
  • Notes: The Duveen Brothers was a firm of influential art dealers from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century based in London, Paris, and New York. With Joseph Duveen (1869-1939) at the helm and the assistance of art experts, most notably Bernard Berenson (1865-1959), Duveen Brothers played a prominent role in the transfer of old master paintings, antique furnishings, and objets d'art from Europe to the United States.
Series III contains the newspaper articles that were selected and assembled by the firm of Duveen Brothers for presentation in large scrapbooks. The scrapbooks document advertising campaigns orchestrated by the firm and they provide comprehensive coverage on Joseph Duveen, the firm's major acquisitions and exhibitions, art collectors and dealers, the art world in general, and the trials the firm was involved in, including Hahn v. Duveen. The court proceedings were filed with the press documentation and have been left in situ in Series III.
