  • Notes: Etienne du Pérac's large bird's-eye view of ancient Rome was originally drawn and engraved by him in 1574. Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi acquired the plates at the middle of the 17th c. During his publishing activity in Rome from 1649 to 1691, he produced two eds. (the first reprinted), to one of which the present view belongs. See Indice delle stampe de' Rossi, Frutaz.
Title across tops of sheets 2-5. Imprint at upper right of sheet 5. Arms of Rome on ornamented shield at upper left of sheet 2. Ornamental tablet at lower right of sheet 11 with Du Pérac's dedication of 1574 to Charles IX, King of France; below it is another version of de Rossi's imprint: Excudebat Romae Io. Iacob. de Rubeis.
The view of Rome is printed on eight sheets. De Rossi had 159 monuments numbered and identified on a separate sheet, in addition to those named on the view. He also had the eight sheets of the view numbered 2-5 and 8-11, as he sold them together with four sheets bearing 12 engraved strips depicting the Roman triumph ("Amplissimi ornatissimique triumphi"), intended to be placed before and after the two rows of four sheets comprising the view. See Frutaz.
