Series I. Correspondence of Sir George Hayter include letters received from artists such as Canova, Eastlake, Landseer, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Henry Fuseli, Horace Vernet and other prominent figures, namely Robert Peel, John Russell, 6th duke of Bedford, Charles M. Young and Prince Charles of Prussia. Included is a letter from William Russell to William Drummond in which Russell states that Hayter has given up portraiture in favor of historical scenes such as his "Trial of Lord William Russell." This painting is the subject of letters from William Penn, Henry Smedley, Peel and Richard Westmacott. Hayter's etchings after Titian are mentioned in letters from Fuseli, Canova and Henry Howard; one letter from Canova is illustrated with studies of heads on the verso. Letters from Italy sent by Westmacott, Eastlake, Joseph Gott and R.B. Hoppner contain news of other artists working there, and refer to Hayter's plans to travel to Italy again himself. Westmacott comments on "this year's freshmen" Prout and Smirke. In an 1825 letter, Eastlake remarks that Hayter is "becoming one of the pillars of English art." Other letters include one from John Herbert recommending a model to Hayter, and one from Alfred d'Orsay about the painter Alfred Stevens.
Letters by Hayter are primarily business-related. Included is a draft of a letter proposing a large painting of the present House of Commons (1833), and a draft of a letter to John Russell explaining that Russell was the rightful owner of a portrait of his father, the Duke of Bedford, which was in Hayter's possession, with Russell's reply. Also, a letter addressed to the head of the Dept. of Natural History at the British Museum inquiring about a species of mollusk Hayter had sketched in Boston. A draft of one letter is written on the verso of a letter from Canova, and a draft letter to Francesco Rossepina is on the verson of a letter received from the Duke of Bedford, both in Italian. With a letter to Charles Sauvageot, 1831 Jan. 2 (in French) regarding the shipment of two paintings from Bologna.
Series II. Family papers include professional correspondence of the artist Charles Hayter, 1820-1832, and letters received by the artist Angelo Collen Hayter, 1850-1879. With a letter from William Hayter and a letter to a second Charles Hayter from Edwin Landseer, 1855. Two of the letters received by the elder Charles concern his treatise on the three primitive colors. Letters received by Angelo Collen Hayter are mostly personal in nature.
