  • Summary: The volume Kangxi dengtu, or Kangxi-era lantern patterns, comprises 22 hand-painted lantern designs, as well as a hand-written preface and postface describing eighteenth-century celebrations at the imperial court in Beijing.
    The preface ([3] pages) by an unidentified author is an account of the ceremonies in Beijing in 1713 on the occasion of the Kangxi emperor's sixtieth birthday, while the postface ([2] pages), presumably by the same author, describes the celebrations in 1790 for the Qianlong emperor's eightieth birthday.
    Twenty-two ink and watercolor drawings with colorful dots over azure backgrounds are pasted onto 11 leaves. Possibly constellations or arrangements of lanterns set up on platforms in Buddhist temples, the designs also feature symbols and animals.

    The concertina-folded (jingzhe zhuang) leaves of stiff paper are glued at fore edge.
