  • Biographical/Historical Note: Photographer: Edward Foà (1862-1901). For Foà, photography was just one of many ways to record his findings. He published nine books on Africa between 1895 and 1908, most of which contain photomechanical reproductions of his photographs. Upon his return to France in 1897, Foà was awarded the Légion d'honneur for his intrepid explorations.
  • Physical Desc.: 7 albums (553 photographic prints : albumen) ; 26 x 34 cm..
  • Summary: In 1886, Edouard Foà was hired by the Marseilles-based colonial trading company of Mante, Régis et Borelli to manage a trading post in Porto-Novo, Dahomey. From 1886 to 1890, Foà explored the French colony of Dahomey (now known as Benin) and the neighboring countries around the Gulf of Guinea. The photographs in albums 1 and 2 were taken during these four years. Album 1 (102 photoprints) covers the modern nations of Benin, Ghana, Togo and Sierra Leone, and also contains ten images of the Canary Islands and Madeira. Album 2 (56 photoprints) includes Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, Angola, Senegal, Liberia and Ghana. Albums 1 and 2 contain ethnographic portraits, views of colonial institutions and scenes of daily life in West Africa.
In 1890 Foà returned to France and was hired by a French financial company to undertake an economic study of south and east Africa. The first year of his expedition is documented in album 3 (92 photoprints), which covers modern South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique. Album 3 contains images of Cape Town and the diamond and gold mines of Kimberley along with many ethnographic views of indigenous peoples, such as the Amatongas, Caffres, Matabeles, Macalacs, Zulus, Hottentots, Bushmen and Landins.
The second half of Foà's expedition is documented in album 4 (81 photoprints). Album 4 includes the modern nations Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, and focuses on the people around Lake Nyasa, such as the Atchekundas, Azimbas, Magandjas, Angonis and Yaos.
Albums 5 and 6 contain photographs Foà purchased on his voyage back to France in 1893. Album 5 (40 photoprints) contains 37 images of Egypt and three of Aden (in Saudi Arabia). The images include views of pyramids, the Suez Canal and people, such as Bedouins, and "native curiosities," such as snake charmers. Album 6 (59 photoprints) includes photographs of the people and colonial installations on the island of Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) and views of ports along the east coast of Africa.
Foà's final and most ambitious expedition of 1894-1897 is documented in album 7 (123 photoprints). Foà traversed central Africa from the east to the west, travelling a route that few explorers had attempted. Album 7 contains images of the indigenous people in the modern nations of Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Zaire and Congo. The majority of the images are ethnographic views in the Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika region.
