  • Summary: Prints designed for an optical viewing device. Title in legend at foot, with a brief title above image printed in reverse for reading in a mirror.
Six of the prints were published in the series Collection des Prospects by the Imperial Academy of Augsburg for sale in its store. Three were published in Paris, two by Daumont and one by Basset (André or his son Paul-André). The print "Prospectus cameratę vineę in hortis gubernatoris Pondicherii" has no indication of publisher, but the record for a copy in the British Library suggests that it was probably published in India in the late 18th century; "Dd4" is printed at lower left.
  • Language: French
  • Notes: The subject of the vue d'optique "Vue et perspective du haut dais ou thrône royale" is French rather than oriental. A popular print derived from an engraving by Jean Marot, it depicts a ceremony that took place in August, 1660. The young Louis XIV with Mazarin is seated on an elevated outdoor platform to receive homage from a procession of men of the law. In the background is the donjon of the Château of Vincennes. See: Inventaire des estampes de la Société des amis de Vincennes.
The print "La ville de Surrate" has been mounted on coarse gray paper, and the windows of buildings as well as the moon have been cut out and backed with hand-colored paper to allow viewing by transmitted candlelight. The parallel German title has been copied in black ink on the verso of the mounting sheet, presumably so it would be accessible to a presenter positioned behind the print.
    Title devised by cataloger.
All prints bear "697" in pencil at lower right recto, an auction lot number. On "Prospectus cameratę vineę" "37" is written on recto in black ink at left, lower left, and right. "Batavie, la ville capitale" is closely trimmed at head and foot, with partial loss to legend at foot.
