  • Language: French
  • Notes: Engraved t.p. vignette (French royal arms). Engraved full-page section titles within large borders for "Devises pour les tapisseries des quatre elemens" and "Devises pour les tapisseries des quatre saisons." Each section has 16 engravings by Le Clerc after Bailly depicting emblematic devices from the tapestry borders, with letterpress explanations in prose above and verse below. Prose explanations presumably by André Félibien, though his name does not appear in this ed. Verses chiefly by Charles Perrault, some by François Charpentier, Jean Chapelin, and Jacques Cassagnes.
For the 2 devices of which two states are described in BN (1547 and 1554), Getty copies are both 1st state.
Getty copy lacks frontispiece (BN 1542), and one of the devices for autumn (BN 1573), having instead a 2nd copy of device BN 1572. Engraving of device BN 1576 printed upside down.
Getty copy includes 8 double-page engravings by Le Clerc of the full tapestries, designed by Charles Le Brun, which first appeared in the Imprimerie royal ed. of 1670 (BN 1586, 1588, 1590, 1591, 1593-1596). Three of the engravings have Jean Goyton's name as printer (BN 1586, 1588, 1590). In the case of BN 1586 and 1590, this signals that they are 1st state; see BN.
Getty copy also includes 4 of 5 double-page prints from the series "Tapisseries des grandes conquêtes du roi" (BN v. 8, 617-621). Most are engraved by Le Clerc after Le Brun. Those present are: "Defaite de l'armée espagnolle" (BN 621), 1680 (Getty copy 2nd state, with text) -- "Renouvellement d'alliance entre la France et les Suisses" (BN 618) by Le Clerc and Jean Nolin after Lebrun and Pierre de Sève, 1682 (Getty copy 4th state, with all texts) -- "Siege de Douay" (BN 619), 1682 (Getty copy 4th state, with Goyton's name as printer) -- "Siege de Tournay" (BN 620), 1681 (Getty copy 2nd state, with text).
Binding: sprinkled sheepskin over wooden boards. Spine tooled in gilt, title on label. Two pairs of cloth ties at foredge.
